2026 Student Guide, Editor-reviewed

Free iPhone for students in 2026.

If you receive a Pell Grant, SNAP, or fall under 135% of the poverty line, the federal Lifeline benefit can put a working iPhone in your hand, without a phone bill.

Compliance note. Lifeline Free iPhone is an independent editorial guide, not a government agency and not a wireless carrier. The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) ended June 1, 2024. Lifeline remains active. All student iPhones referenced here are distributed by authorized Lifeline carriers, not by Lifeline Free iPhone.

Reality check

What a "free student iPhone" actually means in 2026

Set expectations before you spend an hour on paperwork.

  • Pell Grant recipients qualify for Lifeline

Federal Pell Grant is not a direct Lifeline qualifier by itself, but Pell recipients almost always meet the 135% Federal Poverty Guideline income rule that Lifeline uses.

  • You can use a dorm or off-campus address

A campus dorm, shared apartment, or parents' address all count as a valid household for Lifeline as long as only one benefit is claimed per household.

  • Every student gets a brand-new iPhone 17

No. Free iPhones through Lifeline are usually refurbished iPhone 8, X, 11, or 12 models. Newer models are offered by a few providers at a small co-pay.

  • The Affordable Connectivity Program still pays for student devices

No. ACP funding ended June 1, 2024. Only Lifeline is active in 2026. Any site advertising an ACP-funded student iPhone is out of date.

Who qualifies

Four ways students meet Lifeline eligibility

You only need to match one of these to apply.

  • Federal Pell Grant

If your FAFSA award letter shows a Pell Grant, your household income almost certainly qualifies for Lifeline under the 135% FPL rule.

  • Free or Reduced School Lunch (NSLP)

Students in the National School Lunch Program qualify a Lifeline household automatically in many states.

  • SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, WIC, or Public Housing

If you or a household member receives any of these, the whole household is Lifeline-eligible regardless of student status.

  • Household income at or below 135% FPL

Independent students filing their own taxes can qualify on income alone. In 2026 the single-person cap is roughly $21,128 per year.

Step by step

Student application in 6 steps

Plan for about 20 minutes on the National Verifier plus 5-10 business days for the iPhone to ship.

Have this ready before you start

  • FAFSA Pell Grant award letter or SNAP/Medicaid card
  • Government-issued photo ID (state ID, driver license, or passport)
  • Current dorm or off-campus address
  • Last four digits of your SSN or Tribal ID
  1. 1

    Gather your student proof

Have one of these ready: FAFSA Pell Grant award letter, SNAP or Medicaid card, current-year tax return, or your school's NSLP eligibility letter.

  2. 2

    Apply on the National Verifier

Go to checklifeline.org, create an account, and submit your qualifying document. Independent students should apply as their own single-person household.

  3. 3

Pick a provider that ships iPhones

Once approved, choose from AirTalk, TruConnect, Cintex, or StandUp based on your ZIP. Specify iPhone during checkout; do not accept an Android by default.

  4. 4

Confirm shipping to your dorm or apartment

Use the address where you actually live during the semester. Shipping usually takes 5 to 10 business days.

  5. 5

    Activate and set up

Insert the SIM (or scan the eSIM QR), sign in with your Apple ID, and label the line Lifeline. Keep the confirmation email in case you need to prove enrollment later.

  6. 6

    Recertify every year

USAC requires yearly recertification. Log in to your provider account or the National Verifier and re-upload proof to keep the free plan and iPhone active.

FAQ

Student iPhone questions, answered

Do college students really qualify for a free iPhone?

Yes. If a student receives a Pell Grant, SNAP, Medicaid, or lives in a household under 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, they qualify for the federal Lifeline benefit and can receive a free iPhone from participating providers.

Can I use my parents' address if I live on campus?

You can use either the dorm address or your parents' address, but only one Lifeline benefit is allowed per household. If your parents already have Lifeline, apply as an independent household using your dorm address.

Will I get a new iPhone 15 or iPhone 16?

Usually not for free. The typical free device is a refurbished iPhone 8, X, 11, or 12. A few providers offer newer models with a modest co-pay of $20 to $40.

Does high-school NSLP count as a Lifeline qualifier?

In many states yes, when the school participates in the Community Eligibility Provision. Check with your school's counseling office or bring the NSLP eligibility letter to the National Verifier.

Can international students on F-1 visas apply?

No. Lifeline requires U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, or specific qualifying non-citizen statuses. F-1 student visas do not qualify.

What if my school already gives me a Chromebook or hotspot?

You can still apply for Lifeline. School-provided devices are separate from federal Lifeline benefits and do not count as a household benefit.

How long until my iPhone arrives?

About 5 to 10 business days after your Lifeline application is approved and you finish enrollment with the provider.
